Dear Colleagues,
it is our pleasure to invite you to the 6th Euro EUS Congress and the 1st International
Endomicroscopy Meeting taking place in Milan on April 3-5, 2008.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) has become an integrated part of modern gastrointestinal
endoscopy. Today EUS is one of the best techniques for diagnosing and staging GI and
pancreatico-biliary diseases. EUS guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA) is at
present performed on a routine basis in many endoscopic centers and it is evident that
this procedure has a major impact on therapeutic management of the patients by
obtaining a tissue diagnosis from lesions outlined by endosonography.
However, the interpretation of linear EUS images are difficult to learn and the EUS
guided procedures are difficult to master before the procedures can be integrated
into clinical practice. Interventional EUS guided procedures are well established as
EUS guided neurolysis, EUS guided cysto-gastrostomy, EUS guided hepatico-gastrostomy
and EUS guided pancreatico-bulbo or gastrostomy.
New EUS guided therapies will be demonstrated as pancreatic tumour ablation using EUS
guidance.
Endomicroscopy is a newly developed endoscopic modality, which allows in vivo
microscopy of the mucosal layer in about 1000-times magnification with subcellular
resolution during ongoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. Studies have demonstrated that
endomicroscopy which combines confocal microscopy with traditional endoscopy enables
histological diagnosis with high accuracy. Furthermore Endomicroscopy provides in
addition to optical analysis information about the function and physiology of normal
and altered tissue.
We have invited worldwide experts on EUS and Endomicroscopy, they will give state of
the art lectures and will demonstrate the last developments of these technologies
during 3 days of live demonstrations. On behalf of the Scientific Committees, we
would like to wish you a pleasant stay and a successful meeting in Milan.
